United Parents Meeting Thursday, April 03, 2008
7pm – Meeting called to order by co-presidents Jeni Engler and Yvette Yarbor. Student and Staff Person of the Month: Rodric McDonald and Nick Goulet Dan Martin, ELD Specialist, presented a brief outline of the complex challenges faced by SLHS in educating students not familiar with the English language. At the beginning of each year students who are not from English only households are classified as Initial Fluent (16% of this years students), Reclassified Fluent (former English Learners, 21%), or English Learners (16% or 395 students). Intensive English classes are available to these students until they are proficient enough to participate in sheltered or regular classes. Challenges facing this department include students who are fluent (good speaking knowledge) but not very literate (reading and writing), the CAHSEE (high school exit exam) and English learners who are also special education students. Tony Farley and Sean Tobin showed a short video on SLHS’s academies which has been shown to 9th grade English classes. The 9th graders have an opportunity to learn more about the academies and apply for a spot for their sophomore year. The academies enjoy a family atmosphere and give students practical experience and enrichment in their specialties: SLAM – San Leandro Academy for Multimedia – digital photography, video and other media production Business Academy – entrepreneurship, marketing, business management Social Justice – promoting social, political, and environmental change, becoming peer educators, activists, service projects Check slhs.net for more information. Kathy Kahn from Arts Active Parents spoke about the importance of art in education as well as the wealth of information on her organization’s web site, from a schedule of free and inexpensive art and music events to political action in support of education. Parents were encouraged to sign up for the email newsletter. The web site is www.artiseducation.org Amy Furtado brought us up to date on several ongoing and new projects. Plans for the 9th grade academy and arts center will be updated soon. Progress is being made on the PG&E lot to be converted into a parking lot, freeing up the current parking lot for construction on the new arts center. There are also plans for a health center at the high school, with a full time nurse, possible course in sports medicine, and a health career pathway. The school is also looking into a software package that will make student fees easier (PE clothes, yearbooks, etc.) http://www.bluebearsoft.com/ Dates to Remember: San Leandro Scholarship Foundation Dinner and Silent Auction, Thursday April 17th 6pm.
