ELAC Meeting Minutes
March 15, 2008
SLHS 10:30 a.m.

I. Meeting called to order at 10:35 a.m.

II. Approval of minutes: Minutes of the Feb 23 mtg were not approved, as Amy did not have them. They will be approved at the April 5 meeting.

III. State Budget Update: Parents are concerned about the upcoming cuts to education. Mr. Smith is working hard to get parents, students and educators to rally in Sacramento next week to protest cuts to education and get more support for our schools. Amy explained that the district has two problems: we are greatly impacted by the state cuts and our unions are currently negotiating the contracts – affording pay raises and having to cut the budget is very difficult. The good news is that SLUSD is not as bad off as other districts who have already sent out layoff notices and are cutting entire programs.

IV. Parent Survival Guide: Parents would like the Chinese translation of the survival guide. Amy will bring copies to the next meeting.

V. 9th grade and new SLHS parent Workshop: Amy asked if parents would be willing to help with translation and support for an incoming new parent/9th grade parent orientation. A tentative date is Saturday, August 9th.  We will give tours, recruit for ELAC, and talk about ways parents can get involved.

VI. Fundraising: Mr. Smith asked a question about fundraising for events – are there events we would like to fundraise for?  The committee unanimously agreed that we would like to hold an EL student celebration – a potluck dinner and certificate presentation to our EL students. We will give students certificates and special awards for outstanding achievement, perfect attendance, etc. We proposed May 8th as a tentative date for the celebration: 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. Amy will confirm date and location. We will bring ideas to the next meeting for awards.

VII: Homework: Amy asked parents to please get ideas for a community bulletin board that we can create at the entrance to school: what kind of information should we put on the wall?

Meeting adjourned at 11:15 a.m.

I. La junta se inicio a las 10:05 a.m.

II.
