In this class, we will study areas of

  • Physical Science
    • atoms and molecules
    • the properties of matter and energy
    • forces
and
  • Earth science
    • Oceanography - oceans dynamics
    • Meteorology - weather & atmosphere
    • Geology - rocks, plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, biogeochemical cycles and
    • Astronomy - the study of the universe including stars, planets and galaxies and how they formed.
and
  • The Nature of Science:
    • Scientific method
    • inquiry
    • critical thinking
    • lab writing

This course is structured to help you learn science concepts and gain deeper insights into the nature of science. In this class you will strengthen your reading, writing, studying and test taking skills. Science 1 is an academically challenging course that will help prepare you for future science courses.

A bit about Ms. Bliss:

{Ms. Bliss and Bill Nye the Science Guy}

I grew up in Massachusetts. As a high school student I mostly focused on art. I didn't find my passion for science until I attended and later graduated from Hampshire College in 2001. I moved to the Bay Area in 2004 after traveling through Europe and Asia for almost one year. Traveling allowed me to learn about different cultures and ways of living which have been a major influence on my life and the way I teach.

I have been an educator for over 13 years. In the past I was Eduction Coordinator for Save The Bay and The Massachusetts Audubon Society. I finished my Masters in Education in 2010. This is my second year teaching Science 1 at San Leandro High School.

Hobbies: Backpacking, world travel, boxing, Muy Thai, canoeing, painting, ceramics and drawing with pen and ink, gardening and cooking.

Favorite Things to Do:
Try something new or learn something I didn't already know.

Favorite Food: Ceviche

Education:
  • M.A. and Credential in Science Education, University of California, Berkeley 2010
  • B.A. Hampshire College 2001, Environmental Science Education and Ceramic Art, Amherst, MA

I look forward to getting you know all of you more as the year goes on!!! Please feel free to contact me anytime.
